Abstract

The Turnley Collection houses papers dating from 1763 to 1920. These papers document early East Tennessee history (folders 7-10), the daily and business lives of early Tennessee settlers (folders 13-18), Turnley family history (folders 25-26), and George Turnley's estate (folder 27).

Biographical/Historical Note

Delete and replace with: George Turnley was born on August 30th, 1762 to John (1730-1808) and Mary (Handley) Turnley (1735-1829) in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Charlotte Cunnyngham (1770-1834) in 1791. The couple moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee in the 1780s. They had at least five children: John Cunnyngham Turnley (1792-1871), Eliza Jane Turnley (1794-1826), an unnamed infant son that was born and died in 1802, Matthew Jacob Turnley (1805-1889), and Greenberry Madison Turnley (1810-1831).

The eldest son of George and Mary Turnley, John Cunnyngham Turnley became an influential figure in early East Tennessee history. The Turnley family continued to live in East Tennessee for several generations.

Collection consists of two quarter boxes and one flat box.
