The Turnley Collection houses papers dating from 1763 to 1920 related to the Turnley family of East Tennessee. These papers document early East Tennessee history, the daily and business lives of Turnley family members, Turnley family history, and George Turnley's estate.
Biographical/Historical Note
George Turnley was born on August 30, 1762, to John (1730-1808) and Mary (Handley) Turnley (1735-1829) in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Charlotte “Lottie” Cunnyngham (1770-1834) in 1791. The couple moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee. They had at least four children live to adulthood: John Cunnyngham (1792-1871), Eliza Jane (1794-1826), Matthew Jacob (1805-1889), and Greenberry Madison (1810-1831). Turnley died September 3, 1848, and is buried in Jefferson County. Members of the Turnley family continued to live in East Tennessee for several generations.
