R. B. Purdom Letter

In this letter, R. B. Purdom asks Major John Childs about some deposits in favor of Robert Davis that were supposed to have been forwarded to Childs by way of William Bunch and Dr. Frost and then returned (apparently to Purdom) in Huntsville, Alabama. Since they have not been received, Purdom asks Childs to search for them and send them to Davis if they are found.

Since they have not been received, Purdom asks Childs to search for them and send them to Davis if they are found.

Biographical/Historical Note

Richard Belknap Purdom was born to Alexander and Margaret Purdom in Virginia in about 1791. The family moved to Tennessee and settled in Washington County in about 1796. Purdom moved to Alabama in about 1814 where he worked as a merchant and served as a Notary Public, as the Clerk of Madison County, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Town of Huntsville. He married Susannah Brown Sevier (1800-1846) on November 25, 1818, and the couple had a single son, James Alexander Lafayette Purdom (1819-1866). In 1845, the family moved to Hempstead County, Arkansas, where R. B. Purdom died on December 24, 1855.
