The Cantilever Barn Collection spans the years 1850 to 1993, with the bulk of the material from the 1980's. The collection primarily consists of personal correspondence, field research data, and other relevant materials collected by the University of Tennessee Architecture professors Marian Moffett and Lawrence Wodehouse; who started their research on cantilever barns in East Tennessee in 1984. The material of this collection was mostly used in their 1993 University of Tennessee publication, East Tennessee Cantilever Barns and also in their 1984 catalog, The Cantilever Barn in East Tennessee

Abstract

The Cantilever Barn Collection spans the years 1850 to 1993 with the bulk of the material from the 1980's. The collection primarily consists of personal correspondence, field research data, and other relevant materials collected by University of Tennessee Architecture professors Marian Moffett and Lawrence Wodehouse. The material of this collection was mostly used in their coauthored 1993 publication, East Tennessee Cantilever Barns and also their 1984 catalogue, The Cantilever Barn in East Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note

Marian Moffett is a professor of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her major research concentrations have been in the architectural history of vernacular buildings in East Tennessee, such as barns and churches, and also the architecture of TVA's dams, bridges, and steam plants. Marian Moffett received her undergraduate's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1971 and her master's and doctoral degrees in 1973 and 1975 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has worked at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville since 1975. Mrs. Moffett coauthored two books with Lawrence Wodehouse, The Cantilever Barn in East Tennessee, and also Built for the People of the United States: Fifty Years of TVA Architecture.

Lawrence Wodehouse was an Architecture professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1979 to 1993. Wodehouse worked as a professor of Architecture at the Pratt Institute in New York prior to coming to the University of Tennessee. Lawrence Wodehouse received his master's degree from Cornell in 1963 and his PhD from St. Andrews University in 1980. His major research concentrations have been in 19th and 20th century architecture and also the vernacular architecture of East Tennessee. He has coauthored two books with Marian Moffett, The Cantilever Barn in East Tennessee, and also Built for the People of the United States: Fifty Years of TVA Architecture. Lawrence Wodehouse retired in the Spring of 1993.
