Thomas Hughes Letter and Picture
In this letter, Thomas Hughes asks his correspondent (who he addresses simply as “Sir”) if he would be willing to reschedule their meeting for the following Sunday, as his wife is ill and he does not wish to leave her alone. The collection also houses a postcard-sized print depicting Hughes.

Biographical/Historical Note
Thomas Hughes was born on October 22, 1822 in Uffington, Berkshire, England. He attended Rugby School and Oxford, studying law and gaining admission to the bar in 1848. From 1865 to 1874 he was a Member of Parliament in the Liberal Party. He considered himself a Christian Socialist and supported trade unions and women's suffrage. He was also a writer, Tom Brown's School Days (1857). In 1880 he founded Rugby, Tennessee, a utopian colony for English gentlemen. He died on March 22, 1896.
