Biographical/Historical Note

John W. Hammer served in the 16th Ohio Infantry Company K. According to the National Park Service, soldiers of the 16th Ohio Infantry were in the Cumberland Gap area March 21-23 and had a skirmish at Elrod's Ridge on March 22. The Cumberland Gap campaign dates are from March 28 through June 18. The following are specific details: Cumberland Mountain April 28; Cumberland Gap April 29. Occupation of the Cumberland Gap took place from June 18-September 15.
