This collection contains a letter from Confederate soldier Jason Cooper, dated December 5, 1863 from Dalton, Georgia. Written "To his dear friend Farley," Cooper writes about the Confederate evacuation of Chattanooga.

General Bragg had left this unit on the 2nd of December. Cooper hopes that Bragg will be assigned to command of the Trans-Mississippi Department and he "would desire then more than ever to accompany him." He reports that "The Florida Brigade behaved well in the action" - Farley has previously written Cooper that he is thinking of resigning his commission and joining a cavalry unit. Cooper discourages him because of his previous wounds and assures him that he should retain his commission though unable to fight at this time. "No, Farley, there are many posts in rear of our army where your services would be much good to the service." Cooper expresses that he would not mind if the war continued for years except for the suffering of the women and children.
