Abstract

The handwritten John Young Mathematic Exercise Book, 1813, contains the rules of mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. There are many examples of word problems and solutions, plus explanations of fractions, decimals, and other mathematics.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Young of Rockingham County, NC, could be the farmer John Young of North Carolina born to Capt. Isaac Young and Margaret Cantrell in 1781 and died in 1860 or 1866 in Cannon, Dekalb Co., Tenn. He married Lucinda Jane Cantrell (b. 1784-87) in 1803 and had about 8 children.
