Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

J. J. G. Smith's letter to his brother (January 2, 1838) discusses his upcoming travels as a river boat captain. He will soon be headed north, moving stores for the U. S. Army. On the return trip, he plans to transport the 4th Regiment of U. S. Infantry from the Cherokee Agency to Tuscumbia, Ala. He also considers the benefits of taking a job on shore or continuing to work on the river. At the end of the letter, he sends his greetings to various people.
