Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

Collection contains a brief note from Principal Keeper W. E. Gillenwaters to the Chief of Police in Dallas, Texas in hopes that he may be able to aid in the capture of the escaped convict #3531, Enos Briggs, who escaped from the Tennessee State Prison on January 31, 1908.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: The collection consists of two letters written by Congressman Douglas B. Hill representative for Fayette to Shelby counties. Both letters are to Abe Waldauer, who had close ties -- and later managed --the campaigns of Governor Gordon Browning. One letter is on official letterhead and is typed and signed by Hill -- the other letter is handwritten.The first letter is responding to a request by Abe Waldauer to get a pardon for an inmate. Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

Collection consists of a short letter written on the letterhead for Murphy and Robinson, a Knoxville, Tenn., dealer of hats, caps and straw goods. The letter, dated November 2, 1899, reads in part, "I have sold over $200.00 worth of them this year. Everything is moving along nicely. The spring goods are beginning to come in and we have just finished taking stock."

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection consists of one letter, dated May 19, 1906, from Edward Carmack to Jefferson McCarn in which Carmack thanks McCarn for his support in wanting to nominate him for Governor. Three years later McCarn would become the head prosecutor in the 1909 trial of Robin Cooper, who was accused of murdering Carmack in Nashville. For more McCarn material, see MS.2707 and MS.2759.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection consists of a Tennessee Bonds Circular dated May 9, 1866 and signed by Governor William G. Brownlow. In addition, the collection also contains an Executive Department envelope that includes an image of the Tennessee seal. On the back of the first page is an autograph letter signed, from General Horace H. Thomas, Brownlow's private secretary, sending the only available autograph of the Governor which is available.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection consists of a Confederate food inventory from the Office of Chief Commissary of General Simon B. Bolivar's Division dated November 14, 1863. The inventory the thousands of pounds of beef, sugar, and bacon received between November 9 and November 14, 1864 as Confederate General James Longstreet's army was preparing for the attack on Knoxville, Tennessee.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This collection contains a letter, dated March 9, 1864 from camp at Mossy Creek, Tenn., from E. Waldo Stacy of the 36th Massachusetts Infantry. The letter details the events of February 23-March 9, 1864. Stacy and his regiment advanced to Strawberry Plains before withdrawing to Mossy Creek (now Jefferson City). He describes an encounter with a drunken rebel lieutenant.
