This manuscript is a transcript of a speech that William Curtis Stone gave in Celina, Tennessee to the Clay County High School Alumni Association on September 1, 1962. The majority of the document focuses on Clay County's early history and includes lists of prominent settlers. Stone closes his speech with excerpts from an 1876 letter by Captain J. R. Copeland, which gives a vivid description of life during Copeland’s childhood in what was then (early 19th century) called Overton County.

This collection houses John K. Payne’s obituary, Dr. Sutherland’s funeral address (as published in the newspaper), and a formal photograph of Payne. The obituary and funeral address are photocopies, apparently made from originals pasted into a scrapbook. The photograph has a brief history written on its back.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: These five letters were written to Dr. Stanley Folmsbee between 1942 and 1945. In 1942, Ed Glass discusses the USAF, some of his predictions for the war, and his work with the Office of Price Administration. In 1944, Theron Alexander writes two letters, one thanking Folmsbee for using his thesis (written at the University of Tennessee in 1939) and one describing his life in New Guinea. Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: The bulk of this collection consists of a photocopied 35-page report describing a topographical survey of present-day Polk, Monroe, and McMinn counties in Tennessee. It is written in narrative style and includes observations and a sketched map of the area.
