These two speeches were given in Washington, D.C. upon the nomination of Breckingridge and Lane and were then published by the National Democratic Executive Committee. Marshall’s speech, after proclaiming his support for the nominees, gave a history of the split in the Democratic Party that was filled with warning and self-promotion.
