Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: These land grants gave Thomas Coffman and his heirs land in Jefferson County, Tennessee. The first grant, number 17348, is for fifty acres north of the French Broad River, near the lands of McChristian and Matthews. It was entered on February 10, 1827, surveyed on August 4, 1829, and signed by Governor William Carroll on February 14, 1832. The second grant, number 18430, is for 325 acres on the headwaters of Ling Creek, near the lands of Jacobs, Smith, Bette, Matthews, and McChristian. ...

John Dewitt Rexford Land Grant, 1856 January 15

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

This land grant records the transfer of 160 acres of land to J. Dewitt Rexford at the land grant office in Dubuque, Iowa. The land had previously belonged to Harvey Angelly, who received it as a bounty for his service in the Florida War. The grant is signed by President Franklin Pierce.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection:

The three-page letter was sent from Robert McDill to his cousin, Margaret Armstrong, in South Carolina. In it, McDill reports his many blessings, describes the greatness of his new homeland and the wealth that is available, recommends that she move, and then sends good wishes to his friends the Boyd family. In describing western Tennessee, he mentions abundant crops, beautiful weather, good timber, ready water, convenient trade, and friendly people.

Scope and Contents Note From the Collection: The primary document in this collection is Wiley's commission as Captain to the Fifth Infantry Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers on March 14, 1863. It is signed by Governor Andrew Johnson, commander in chief of these forces and by Alvan C. Gillem, Colonel Adjutant General. It is accompanied by a tattered sheet of brown paper with a list of the sixty nine members of Wiley's Company F.
