Earl, and complains that [t]imes in Nashville are exceedingly dull and hard. He closes by asking after General Eaton (who he thinks should come to Nashville because the Foster and Grundy parties are waxing very hot) and sending his respects to Jackson's family.

The W. Gibbs McAdoo letter, written November 8, 1860, describes the mood in Knoxville, Tenn., after Lincoln's election. He also tells of an incident in which someone tied a tin bucket and a note reading "Going out of the Union" to a dog and turned it loose on Gay Street.

The letter, which is marked private, was written from Columbia. In it, Polk discusses the results of canvassing in Western and Middle Tennessee. He predicts that his party will gain three to seven members in the Legislature in the western counties and surpass the Whig Party in Middle Tennessee.

This collection contains a letter from October 13, 1843 written by William Houston to send to his brother-in-law Thomas Wier of Jacksboro, Tennessee.
