This collection consists of materials belonging to botanist Samuel Bain and his family. Most materials in the collection are related to the Great Smoky Mountains.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park Oral History Collection
This collection contains oral histories about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park through interviews of people who lived in the area in the early twentieth century. These interviews were conducted by students from the University of Tennessee in Anthropology and Appalachian Folklore classes.

This collection consists primarily of class projects written for Dr. Michael Lofaro's Folklore class between April and July of 2007. It also houses Dr. Lofaro's research on William Byrd's Commonplace. The projects document various aspects of folklore from around the world and are organized first by subject matter and second by the creator's last name.

Michael Lofaro Folklore Class Papers
This collection is composed of student projects from Dr. Michael Lofaro's class on folklore. There is a wide range of topics from Appalachian quilts, superstitions, and home remedies to drinking games, BDSM slang, and jump rope rhymes. It includes student papers from the following semesters: Spring 1999, Summer 1999, Fall 1999, Spring 2001, and Summer 2005. Audiotapes, videotapes, computer disks, and photographs accompany some projects.
Michael Lofaro Folklore Class Papers
This collection houses two student projects conducted as part of Dr. Michael Lofaro's class on American folklore at the University of Tennessee dating from 2004 and 2007. The first project consists of a study of 50 proverbial phrases, traditional remedies, jokes, stories, jingles, and superstitions and includes VHS video footage. The second project consists of 25 folk remedies.
