One letter with envelope written by Sgt. Charles H. Roney on June 25, 1862 to his parents. He talks about living in the military and getting ill as well as fortifying Cumberland Gap. He talks about the capturing of a "Secesh" (Secessionist) flag and about people from home.

In this letter to his wife Nancy, Stephen Ward describes encountering Confederate cavalry on a recent scouting mission, the inclement winter weather, and foraging for food and supplies. He also complains that his recent exertions have left him "as sore as an old Government mule" and mentions that a wealthy Union sympathizer had been hung after two of his Confederate neighbors betrayed him shortly before Ward's unit arrived in the area.

This letter, written by Thomas M. Walker, discusses his time in the Civil War. At the time this letter was written, Walker was stationed with the Ohio 15th Infantry in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Huddard’s letters to his father describe many aspects of life in the western armies during the Civil War. He describes battles, camp life, enemy combatants, the environment, furloughs, his health, rumors, and weather.

This collection is composed of a letter that William Cosgrove of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery Regiment, Battery G, wrote to his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Bowers, in Mount Vernon (Knox County) Ohio from Nashville, Tennessee on January 31, 1864. He writes of cousin Charles's death in Memphis and his own Battery's move to Nashville. Also, he speaks of conditions in camp, including a recent outbreak of smallpox and his personal troubles with rheumatism.

He reports that he and his company are well and tells of their recent victory against Confederate guerrillas. He also recounts an amusing story about their Major General (a man named Moniter), who slept all day and got the company into some trouble.
