Charles Chaillé-Long Letter

Abstract

This collection contains a letter, dated June 23, 1892, by Charles Chaillé-Long, an American soldier and a member of Charles Gordon’s staff in the Egyptian Equatoria province. The letter is to British explorer and abolitionist Samuel White Baker, Gordon’s predecessor as Governor-General of Equatoria. The letter addresses Chaillé-Long’s book that has a negative outlook on General Gordon.

Egypt and Sudan Voyage Album

Abstract

This photograph album, containing 96 photographs circa 1900, documents a Nile voyage from Alexandria to Khartoum, situated at the confluence of the White and Blue Nile. The album includes scenic images of travelers, banks of the Nile, cities and towns visited as well as archaeological sites. This album was created shortly after Sudan was put under British-Egyptian administration in 1899.

Abstract

This collection contains 47 photographs of temples and antiquities located in Upper Egypt, including over 30 images of the Egyptian temples of Karnak, Luxor, Thebes, Philae and Abu Simbel. Also included are general views and close-ups of architectural details, statues, or bas-reliefs.

Occasionally, the images feature the region's native inhabitants, ancient structures still in modern use, and ships - including Egyptian dahabiyas and steamships - on the Nile.

James Lingard-Monk Egypt Journal

Abstract

This collection contains James Lingard-Monk’s journal of his excursion to the Valley of the Kings between November 28, 1888 and January, 1889. The account details archaeological sites such as Karnak, Thebes, Luxor, Memphis, Sakkarah and the Great Pyramid of Giza. The journal not only includes accounts of his trip but also personal reflections as well as excerpts from his travel guide books.

John Page Nile River Travel Journal

Abstract

This collection contains the diary of John Page, a member of a Nile expedition with Lord Abercromby. Dated October 23, 1857 to February 16, 1858, the diary covers the expedition from Alexandria to Cairo and eventually up the Nile. It is a narrative of place, people, ancient culture, and contemporary customs, events, and occurrences during the trip.
