Andrew Jackson Indenture of Partition, Conveyance, and Release

Abstract

This indenture, made on December 5, 1822 and proven in January 1825, divides a 5,000 acre tract of land in Shelby County, Tennessee, between John Overton, James Winchester, Andrew Jackson, William Winchester, and George Winchester.

This collection consists of a 1853-1870 ledger book by Attwood from the Memphis, Tennessee area. Transactions involve the purchase of lumber, stone cutters, and sales of building lots. This collection also contains two loose receipts one of which is undated while the other is dated 1878.

Abstract

This collection contains a a rare, early map of what would eventually become Memphis, Tennessee. This map shows the divisions of a tract of land belonging to Andrew Jackson, John Overton, and James Winchester. This copy of the map is thought to have been created on June 8, 1836.

Solomon Porter Petition

Abstract This petition to the County Court of Shelby County, Tennessee was prepared by an unknown lawyer on behalf of a free man of color named Solomon Porter. Porter, a native of Tennessee, assures the court that he desires to seek employment in Shelby County in order to adequately support his family. He hopes to remain in the area so that his numerous acquaintances may assist him in finding employment, aided by his industry, sobriety, and honesty. William H. Stokes Bill of Sale for a Slave Family

Abstract

In this bill of sale, dated August, 1850, William H. Stokes transfers his ownership of a family of five ensalved people to L. Cook and R. B. Hanley of the firm of Cook & Hanley in Shelby County, Tenn. The family consists of Charles, aged 26 or 27 years, Anna his wife, aged 20 years, and their three children, Nelly about 4 years old, Betty about 3 years old, and a female infant.
