Dated January 23, 1816, this tax receipt shows that Abraham Lowry of Sullivan County, Tenn., paid $239.44 for the Direct Tax of 1815.

The J. Fain Anderson Letter, 1905, was written to author and historian Gentry R. McGee about the schoolbook A History of Tennessee by McGee and about the possibility of developing a history of Sullivan County.

This document certifies that James P. White purchased 5,000 acres of land in Sullivan County, Tennessee from George Bushong for $550.

This document describes the boundaries of a plot of land by listing the trees and poles that outline it. The back of the sheet, which is appears to be part of a larger piece of paper, is stamped "Knoxville Nov 9" and seems to be addressed to "Mr Jesse M, green field, Sull."

Contained within the collection are Civil War-era records, John Rhea's financial transactions, Sons of Temperance financial transactions, material on Samuel Rhea's missionary trips to Persia, and John Rhea's correspondence. Also are included are Rhea genealogical material and various church records.

This collection features one letter from Samuel Houston to Andrew J. Donelson dated November 3, 1823.

This ledger belonged to Dr. Samuel R. McDowell, who practiced medicine in Sullivan County during the first half of the 20th century. It records customers' payments for his services between 1916 and 1921.

Reverend Thomas Stringfield wrote this letter to the Reverend J. C. Bingham and Dr. Noah Levings from Bean's Station (Grainger County) Tennessee on April 19, 1846. In it, he reports on his activities as an itinerant Methodist preacher in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, including the sermons he has preached, the Bible Societies he has founded, and the Bibles he has distributed in such places as Bean's Station (Tennessee), Asheville (North Carolina), and Jonesboro (Tennessee).
