117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (Company B) Medical Ledger

Abstract

Seventy page battlefield ledger for Company B of the 117th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The ledger includes daily medical reports from January 24th to April 15, 1863. During this time the company was stationed at Ft. Pickering, Tenn. defending Memphis. Patients are listed by name and action (i.e. excused from duty, assigned modified duty, sent to hospital, or quarantine). A small loose piece of paper -- possibly a prescription or doctor's note -- is included among the pages.

Abstract

The Boyd Letters contains six letters written by Joseph E. Boyd of the 115th Illinois Volunteer Infantry between September 1862 and January 1864. These letters describe Union military camp conditions, the environment of Tennessee, Union soldiers' viewpoints regarding the war and Confederates, battles and military operations in Middle and East Tennessee, and the family concerns of Union soldiers.

Abstract This collection consists primarily of a ledger that Marion Bennett compiled between 1886 and 1925. He begins with a brief history of the 59th Indiana Infantry, describing the unit's travel down the Mississippi River through such cities as New Madrid, Corinth, Moscow, and Memphis, the battles and campaigns they participated in (including the Siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea), and their travel through such battle sites as Chattanooga, Mission Ridge,...

Tilghman Blazer Papers

This collection consists of two notebooks that Tilghman Blazer kept between 1864 and 1892. The first details his military experience as a member of Company K of the 8th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry (Union) in Georgia and Tennessee during 1864, and the second contains classroom rosters and business transactions written after his return to Cocke County, Tenn.

William A. Smith Letter

Abstract

William A. Smith of the 116th Pennsylvania Infantry (also called the Irish Brigade) wrote this letter to his family in Chester County, Pennsylvania on August 30, 1863. In it, he reports that three men from the 2nd Division (one from the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry and another from the 20th Massachusetts Infantry) were executed for desertion and speculates that some from his own regiment might suffer the same fate.
