Sgt. Charles H. Roney Letter

Abstract

One letter with envelope written by Sgt. Charles H. Roney on June 25, 1862 to his parents. He talks about living in the military and getting ill as well as fortifying Cumberland Gap. He talks about the capturing of a "Secesh" (Secessionist) flag and about people from home.

Sgt. William A. Smith Letter to J. O. Jones

Abstract

A letter was written by Sgt. William A. Smith, Co. B 71 Ind. 6th Cav., on October 5, 1863. He talks about Union occupation north of Knoxville, TN and the increased price of goods and foods in the Confederate states as oppsosed to the Union. He also writes about a brigade of women marching and carrying the U.S. flag. The letter was submitted to Mr. J. O. Jones, postmaster of Terre Haute, Indiana, in hopes that he could get it published in the local newspaper.

Soldier Alexander B. Richards Civil War Letter

Personal correspondence between Union soldier Alexander B. Richards and his sister, Emaline Butcher of Murphysboro, Illinois, dated February 14, 1864. He details the Battle of Knoxville and Fort Sanders (Tenn.) which took place on November 29, 1863 and his trek from Chattanooga with H Co. Illinois 27th Infantry.

Soldier Robert P. Rudder Letter

This collection consists of one letter sent by Sergeant Robert P. Rudder of the 6th Regiment of the East Tennessee Volunteer Infantry to his sister during the Civil War in 1864. The correspondence details his experience after the Battle of Atlanta, fought July 22, 1864, and also contains personal details and reflections on his time in service.

Southgate Cregmile Letters

Abstract

This collection consists of thirty-two letters to and from Southgate Cregmile during the Civil War (1862-1865). Cregmile served in the 69th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. The letters are addressed to his family back home and to his brother, Crittenden Cregmile, who also served in the military during the Civil War. Cregmile's letters to his mother and brother discuss the daily activities of a Union Soldier during the Civil War.

T. K. Gay Letter

Abstract

This collection consists of one handwritten letter, written in 1864 in Knoxville, Tennessee, by T. K. Gay of the Signal Corps to his brother Cal in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. It reports that Knoxville is currently tranquil but expresses concern that John Morgan is preparing to attack. Gay hypothesizes that if Morgan were to attack he would meet strong resistance, as more troops were expected for the defense of the city. Gay also opines that the war will end soon.

Thompson and Trundle Civil War Letter

Overview

Collection contains a single letter written by William Helsley, a soldier in the 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on August 29, 1864. Helsley penned this letter to his wife, Mary Yauser Helsley, while stationed in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the letter, Helsley discusses a scare in which he and others were warned of activities by Confederate Colonel Wheeler that ultimately never happened.

William W. Howard Letters

Abstract This collection consists of twelve letters that William Howard wrote to his sister Sallie while he served in the Union army aboard the USS Brilliant. The letters are primarily concerned with personal matters, especially William's complaints that no one but Sallie writes to him, but he does describe battles and other war news occasionally. His April 6, 1863 letter is addressed from outside of Gnashville, and the final letter is addressed from the U.S. hospital ship Home...
