The collection contains a letter written by Captain James Fowler Rusling (1834-1918) of the 17th U.S.C.T in Beech Grove, Tennessee to Captain Marsh of the "F" Co. MI 19th Infantry. The correspondence discusses rebel troop movements across the Harpeth River under General Hood in 1864.

A single handwritten letter from James J. Vauln in LaGrange, Tenn. to General Ulysses S. Grant in Memphis, Tenn. dated June 23, 1862. Vauln, a deacon of the American Catholic Church in LaGrange, pleas for permission to continue his church services, as the new brigadier general had forced him to stop holding services.

Lieutenant William H. Mickle Letter

Abstract

This December 22, 1863, letter from William H. Mickle discusses his participation in the Knoxville campaign while serving in the New York 134th Infantry division. Mickle makes specific note of the condition of the company, mentioning the long marches and lack of equipment such as shoes. He goes on to write about Abraham Lincoln and the government boats traversing the Tennessee River towards Knoxville.

This collection consists of a Civil War Letter written by Lyman C. Flanders on April 26, 1864, from Knoxville. In the letter, Flanders asked his friend Huntington to go to Captain Mills' office to retrieve a favorite pistol taken from him at the Chattanooga Depot.

Marcus Richardson Correspondence

Abstract

A four-page handwritten letter, signed "MR" by Lieutenant Marcus Richardson, sent to Captain Joseph Washington Anderson. Written from Cumberland Gap, Tenn., the letter details the reconnaissance and skirmish that took place at Cumberland Gap in the days prior under the command of Major General Edmund Kirby Smith. The letter is dated March 23, 1862.

Abstract The collection contains thirty Civil War letters written to and from Binghamton, New York and a variety of places in Tennessee. Some of the letters are written on paper provided by the U. S. Christian Commission. Most of the letters still have their original envelopes, some with postmarks and stamps still affixed. The letters from Binghamton are written by Eliza Smith and D. D. A letter written by Moses Elkanah Thompson, dated June 7, 1863, to Francis M. Blair in response to one received from Blair earlier. In the letter, Thompson briefly mentions the Battle at Vicksburg and the number of men both sides lost. He also mentions his desire for the war to end.

Robert T. Jones Letters

Abstract

This collection houses fourteen letters sent to Robert T. Jones by friends and family serving in the Civil War. Ten of the letters are from James Thomas, and the others were written by John Williams, Daniel Thomas, and John T. Jones. Several of the letters describe the siege of Vicksburg and other battles. Most of the letters include news of other Welsh friends from Iowa. The collection also houses two photographs, one showing cannons and the other showing soldiers near rows of tents.
