In this letter from Lieutenant Colonel John Scott, he claims Colonel Nelson G. Williams of the 3rd Iowa Regiment incorrectly and maliciously reported Second Lieutenant Benton A. Mathews, Second Lieutenant Ole A. Anderson, and Lieutenant Colonel Mathew M. Trumbull of Company D as well as Captain Emilius I. Weiser of Company I as deserters. Scott calls for an investigation so that these men, who had been wounded and served valiantly, might have their records corrected.

While encamped in the Cumberland Ford area of Knox County, Tenn., John W. Hammer serving in the 16th Ohio Infantry Company K writes to a friend named Annie. In this letter dated June 4, 1862, he describes the fortifications that are in place to protect them from the Confederates. His company moves toward the Confederate camps and skirmishes occur.

This collection contains two letters written on one sheet of paper. The first, from Martha Stewart to her husband Joseph (dated November 30, 1864) details the daily happenings in Franklin Square, Ohio. The second, from hospitalized Joseph in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to his wife and children (dated December 24-25, 1864) discusses the Battle of Nashville.

This collection contains the diary and daybook of Union soldier Julius E. Thomas, 2nd Sergeant and Chief Bugler of Company F, 1st Tennessee Cavalry. Entries range from August 5, 1864 through April 5, 1865. Thomas writes about the movement of his company throughout Tennessee. Additionally, the entries cover topics such as supplies, battles, sermons, and Thomas’s feelings about being a soldier.

A four-page handwritten letter, signed "MR" by Lieutenant Marcus Richardson, sent to Captain Joseph Washington Anderson. Written from Cumberland Gap, Tenn., the letter details the reconnaissance and skirmish that took place at Cumberland Gap in the days prior under the command of Major General Edmund Kirby Smith. The letter is dated March 23, 1862.

A letter written by Moses Elkanah Thompson, dated June 7, 1863, to Francis M. Blair in response to one received from Blair earlier. In the letter, Thompson briefly mentions the Battle at Vicksburg and the number of men both sides lost. He also mentions his desire for the war to end.

In a March 12, 1864 letter from Anderson, Tenn., to his sister in Spafford, N.Y., Private Perry Norton of the 149th New York Infantry writes to inform her of his condition and pass on a rumor that his regiment may return to the Army of the Potomac.

This collection houses fourteen letters sent to Robert T. Jones by friends and family serving in the Civil War. Ten of the letters are from James Thomas, and the others were written by John Williams, Daniel Thomas, and John T. Jones. Several of the letters describe the siege of Vicksburg and other battles. Most of the letters include news of other Welsh friends from Iowa. The collection also houses two photographs, one showing cannons and the other showing soldiers near rows of tents.

A letter was written by Sgt. William A. Smith, Co. B 71 Ind. 6th Cav., on October 5, 1863. He talks about Union occupation north of Knoxville, TN and the increased price of goods and foods in the Confederate states as oppsosed to the Union. He also writes about a brigade of women marching and carrying the U.S. flag. The letter was submitted to Mr. J. O. Jones, postmaster of Terre Haute, Indiana, in hopes that he could get it published in the local newspaper.

Personal correspondence between Union soldier Alexander B. Richards and his sister, Emaline Butcher of Murphysboro, Illinois, dated February 14, 1864. He details the Battle of Knoxville and Fort Sanders (Tenn.) which took place on November 29, 1863 and his trek from Chattanooga with H Co. Illinois 27th Infantry.

Huddard’s letters to his father describe many aspects of life in the western armies during the war. He describes battles, camp life, enemy combatants, the environment, furloughs, his health, rumors, and weather.

Abstract William T. Presley of Company A of the 1st Alabama Cavalry wrote these two letters to his wife, Henrietta (Ward) Presley, in Prattville, Alabama. In the first letter, dated September 30, 1862 from camp direction Chattanooga, Presley mentions his need for a new horse, arguing that "all men that are worthy property ought to help us poor creatures that have left our families to fight to protect them as well as our own families."
