Elijah A. Hawn Papers

Abstract

This collection contains six letters of personal correspondence between Elijah Hawn and his wife Nancy dated from May 26, 1862 through June 16, 1863. Also included are form no. 79 from the U.S. Treasury Department (which allows for Nancy to be granted a widow’s pension), a letter from the Department of the Interior rejecting her widow’s pension on the grounds that she remarried, and a division of land agreement.

George Sowers Letter

In this letter to his parents and brother, George Sowers reports that he is in good health, describes the 23 mile march that his regiment has just finished, mentions that he prefers Tennessee to Kentucky, and says that the Rebels have left Tennessee for Florida.

George Sowers Letters

In these two letters to his brother, George Sowers mentions getting some tobacco (which is scarce in Tennessee), discusses his regiment's opinion of their Lieutenant Berry, and reports on his health. He also implores his brother to write him more often and asks for news of his family.

Harry C. Cushing Letters

Abstract

This collection consists of letters that Harry C. Cushing wrote to his mother, father, and friend Ned Atwell while serving in the U.S. Civil War. The letters are written between September 1860 and November 1864 and include the letters that Cushing wrote while stationed in Tennessee from November 1862 to March 1864. Many of these documents provide detailed descriptions of battles as well as witty stories regarding camp life and occasional sketches.

The Henry Cherry Letters, 1864-1865, contain nine letters from Cherry, a Chaplain with the 10th Michigan Cavalry in the Civil War, to Amos Gould of Owosso, Mich., describing both military and civilian life in the Union Army during the Civil War. The majority of these letters were written from Knoxville, Tenn.

Isabel Belle Scott of Gratiot, Wisconsin wrote this letter to her brother James, who was then serving with Company B of the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, on 15 February 1863. Belle is under the impression that James is helping to construct a canal at Vicksburg and the letter is addressed to him via Memphis, Tennessee.

This collection houses the diary of Private James B. David of the 89th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The diary documents entire year of 1864, but it only has a few references for the months of November and December. The first pages of the diary list the addresses of some of the soldiers who served with David.

James Pritchard Letter

Abstract

In this letter written from Waverly, Tenn., and dated February 16, 1864, James E. Pritchard of the 8th Iowa Cavalry writes to his brother John. He comments that the "Rebels will never regain a hold on East Tennessee," noting that in Waverly, 300 Confederates surrendered and took the oath of allegiance.
