This collection consists of a service memory book presented to John C. Messamore by his mother. This collection consists of correspondence, maps, photographs, yearbooks, newspaper clippings, official records, and many other types of memorabilia. It documents Joseph E. Martin’s military service in World War II as well as his education, ROTC service, and career as a math professor. It also includes veterans’ activities, World War II comics, and such personal effects as wedding invitations and church bulletins from the 1940’s.

This collection consists of a transcript of an interview with Lonas Tarr by G. Kurt Piehler and Kathryn P. O'Donnell conducted on March 7, 2003 in Knoxville, Tennessee as part of the Center for the Study of War and Society's Veteran's Oral History Project. Tarr speaks of his childhood in Jefferson City, his experiences in the Air Force during World War II, and his postwar life working as an American Airlines pilot in Europe.

Lyman E. Zellar Papers

Overview

This collection documents Lyman Zellar’s wartime service in World War II with the 14th Armored Division. It includes "Recollections of World War II Years" from Zellar’s autobiography, a typed manuscript of approximately 80 pages. Zellar describes his service from training to active combat in great detail. Also included are two publications related to the history and activities of the 48th Tank Batallion from 1945.

Matt Chitwood Collection

Overview

This collection documents the World War II service of Matt Chitwood and contains a letter, a photograph of Chitwood during his service, and a newsletter from USS Taylor. The letter, handwritten and five pages in length, was written in 1997 by Chitwood and includes some remembrances of the war and his time at the 83rd Field Hospital, particularly working with German POWs.

Merle L. Perkins Memoirs

Overview This collection contains two memoirs written by Merle Perkins regarding his experiences serving in World War II. The first is entitled “Ordeal of Arms: Air Combat, Europe and the Balkans” (1993) and is over 200 pages of a typed narrative with copies of illustrations and newspaper articles. Also included is a chronological list of missions Perkins flew in the preface of the manuscript. The second writing is entitled “Recollections of Air Combat” (1996) and is over 100 typed pages of poems...
