Henry Ault Grocery Solicitation

Abstract

Henry Ault printed these solicitation letters to inform potential customers of his Grocery & Commission business on Gay Street. He specifically mentions constant and ample supplies of coffee and sugar before describing his warehouses and his consignment procedures. He closes by reminding his recipients of his long experience. This letter has been folded and mailed to Joseph Johnson Esq., a merchant in Madisonville, Tennessee.

James Lynn Broadside

Abstract

This broadside, issued by James Lynn on December 22, 1875, begs his debtors to come forward and pay up. Lynn, a produce merchant from Kingsport, Tennessee, claims his own creditors are demanding immediate payment and even offers to buy back his produce at full market value in lieu of repayment in cash. He also informs his customers that he will be postponing any further general credit to be issued until more money is available.

Tennessee Grocer's Ledger

Abstract

This ledger records the grocery accounts of several hundred people. Each page is headed by the person's name and includes the date, item, and price for each transaction in addition to occasional payments. Some accounts end with a note of the amount transferred to New Book. A copy of an engraving captioned H E Hall was found loose between the pages.
