Commencement, 1999 Summer

 File — Box: 2, Folder: 15
Identifier: III
From the Collection:

This collection houses materials from the Office of the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, including reading files, commencement materials, plans to change the University from a quarter system to a semester system, materials documenting the University Historian’s office, and information showing the Chancellor’s Teaching Scholars program. The bulk of this collection dates from the administration of Chancellor William T. Snyder, but some correspondence prior to 1993 comes from the administration of Chancellor John Quinn.

Series I contains reading files from the Quinn and Snyder administrations. Materials from January 1992 include Quinn’s resignation from the Chancellorship. His last month was May 1992, upon which Snyder assumed the position. Materials from November 1992 contain information on the Bridge to the Future University development campaign, and May-June 1993 includes information on John Peters' accession to the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Series II contains information on various campus issues, including the transition from a quarter system to a semester system, the University Historian’s office (its operation, mission, collection of historical data, and closure due to budget cuts), and the Chancellor’s Teaching Scholars (a program to recognize two faculty members yearly for outstanding classroom instruction).

Series III contains programs, texts of prepared speeches, and photographs showing University commencements from 1994 to 1999. Commencement speakers during this period included Senators Bill Frist and Fred Thompson, Governor Don Sundquist, UT President Joseph Johnson, UT Dean of Libraries Paula Kaufman, and other community leaders and university administrators.
