This collection houses materials from the Office of the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, including reading files, commencement materials, plans to change the University from a quarter system to a semester system, materials documenting the University Historian’s office, and information showing the Chancellor’s Teaching Scholars program. The bulk of this collection dates from the administration of Chancellor William T. Snyder, but some correspondence prior to 1993 comes from the administration of Chancellor John Quinn.

Series I contains reading files from the Quinn and Snyder administrations. Materials from January 1992 include Quinn’s resignation from the Chancellorship. His last month was May 1992, upon which Snyder assumed the position. Materials from November 1992 contain information on the Bridge to the Future University development campaign, and May-June 1993 includes information on John Peters' accession to the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Series II contains information on various campus issues, including the transition from a quarter system to a semester system, the University Historian’s office (its operation, mission, collection of historical data, and closure due to budget cuts), and the Chancellor’s Teaching Scholars (a program to recognize two faculty members yearly for outstanding classroom instruction).

Series III contains programs, texts of prepared speeches, and photographs showing University commencements from 1994 to 1999. Commencement speakers during this period included Senators Bill Frist and Fred Thompson, Governor Don Sundquist, UT President Joseph Johnson, UT Dean of Libraries Paula Kaufman, and other community leaders and university administrators.

Abstract

This collection houses materials from the Office of the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee, including reading files, commencement materials, plans to change the University from a quarter system to a semester system, materials documenting the University Historian’s office, and materials showing the Chancellor’s Teaching Scholars program. The bulk of this collection dates from the administration of Chancellor William T. Snyder, but some correspondence prior to 1993 comes from the administration of Chancellor John Quinn.

Biographical/Historical Note

John J. Quinn earned a BS in physics at St. John's University in 1954. He earned a PhD in physics at the University of Maryland in 1958 and held a postdoctoral position there from 1958 to 1959. He served as Associate Provost and later Dean of the Faculty at Brown University prior to coming to the University of Tennessee, where he served as Chancellor from 1989 to 1992. Upon his resignation from the Chancellorship, he became Professor of Physics and assumed the Willis Lincoln Chair of Excellence at UT.

William T. Snyder began his career at the University of Tennessee in 1964 at the Space Institute in Tullahoma. He then joined the College of Engineering on the Knoxville campus, where he progressed to department head of engineering and mechanics and then to Dean of the College in 1983. Snyder was named University of Tennessee Chancellor in 1992, and used the position to champion affirmative action, diversity, and new technologies. Upon stepping down in 1999, he began a special assignment for President J. Wade Gilley developing strategies for implementing the president's new Tennessee Plan for Academic Excellence.
