James Lingard-Monk Egypt Journal, 1888 November 28 - 1889 January

 Item — Box: 1, Folder: 1
From the Collection:

This collection contains James Lingard-Monk’s journal of his excursion to the Valley of the Kings between November 28, 1888 and January, 1889. The preface is signed by Lingard-Monk on March 6, 1889, from Melmore, Southsea. The entries are copied from his original diaries taken during the trip. The accounts detail archaeological sites such as Karnak, Thebes, Luxor, Memphis, Sakkarah and the Great Pyramid of Giza. In addition, Monk describes his experiences, such as balking at exploring a hazardous 'secret passage connecting the temple with that of Edfon' and catching a performance of Howling Dervishes. He also describes the region’s culture, remarking on Arab dress and customs, his visits to a Bedouin bazaar, and the Islamic architecture of Cairo mosques and the tombs of the Mamelukes. The journal also includes personal reflections as well as excerpts from his travel guide books.
