This collection includes approximately 130 letters by members of the Saffell and Bogle family in correspondence with one another regarding their daily activities between April 23, 1833, and February 10, 1836. Of particular interest are two letters authored during the Civil War: one letter dated September 12, 1864, from Richard M. Saffell during his time with the 26th Tennessee infantry stationed in Jonesboro, Georgia and another letter dated August 5, 1864, by U.L. York of the 63rd Tennessee Regiment informing Colonel Saffell of the death of his brother Samuel H. Saffell. In addition to the correspondence, the collection contains assorted items of note including: news clippings pertaining to the Bogle and Saffell family, a slave and store ledger, and two confederate bills.
