Wilma Dykeman continues her prolific writing career in the 1970s with letters recording her researching, writing, publishing, and promoting processes for Return the Innocent Earth (1973, at one point referred to as The Root and The Claw), Too Many People, Too Little Love (1974), Tennessee: A Bicentennial History (1975), Tennessee Women: Past and Present (with editor Carol Lynn Yellin, 1977) and With Fire and Sword: The Battle of Kings Mountain, 1780 (1978). The 1970s also mark when she begins collaborating with her sons Dykeman and James Stokely III on writing projects such as Highland Homeland (with Jim Stokely, 1978) and Appalachian Mountains (with Dykeman Stokely, 1980). James R. Stokely Jr.’s correspondence with his family, friends, business associates, and newspaper editors cease with his death in 1977.
