Shiloh Baptist Church Minutes, 1821 May 26-1866 June

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1
From the Collection:

Agnes B. Maddox typed these 28 pages from the only written copy of the Shiloh Baptist Church's minutes in 1964. The manuscript begins with an index of members, noting whether they are deceased, dismissed, or excluded. The minutes themselves begin on May 26, 1821 with Bird Deatherage appointed moderator and Abner Deatherage clerk. These pages are photocopies of the original typewritten documents.

On November 23, 1822 the church agreed to petition for a presbytery to constitute them as a church at their July meeting. Most of the subsequent minutes document receiving new members but also mention excluding members for misbehaviors, making arrangements for sharing preaching among local churches, and conducting other church business. The minutes end in June 1866 with a note signed by T. A. Barnard indicating that the church had decided to restore itself after political schism in 1865, when many members had been excluded for joining or aiding rebel troops. The manuscript ends with a list of the Rules of Decorum (originally signed by John A. Matheney, clerk) that the church had adopted on November 26, 1836.
