Barge Tow in Alabama, undated
Original caption reads: The freight on this 12 barge tow originated in Ohio, Pennsylania, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky. The tow consisted of seven barges coal, one of coke, two of grain, one of steel, and one of fuel oil. It was largest tow ever handled on the Tennessee River. More than 400 freight cars would have been required to haul the 21,500 tons handled by the tow. Photo shows tow near site of TVA's Colbert Steam Plant, Alabama.
