This collection consists of two letters written by Adam Loy of the 89th Indiana Infantry to his wife Sarah . Loy writes of his experiences in the infantry. The diction of the letter is quite poor, making it difficult to decipher.

In the first letter dated May 21, 1863 from Memphis, Loy writes that his regiment has lost four men since it has been in Tennessee and that there has been a great deal of sickness and fever. He claims that the Rebels commenced fighting the night before and he can hear the cracking of the guns. He writes that the officers have alerted the regiment to be ready to fight. Loy says that the men are as tanned as negroes and that the weather has been warm.

In the second letter dated May 23, Loy inquires about conditions at home, and expresses his desire to come home to eat chicken.
