This collection consists of one letter by Union Corporal George Gates to his aunt on November 26, 1863, and describes the then-unnamed Battle of Lookout Mountain which occurred in Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. It was written by him on the 26th of November when he returned to his camp outside of Chattanooga and gives an account of casualties on both sides.

He recounts his regiment's losses as lightwith five horses killed and one man wounded in the leg. He mentions his impending return to the front in regret for the letter being quite brief.
