M. W. Gudger used this ledger to record accounts associated with his medical practice in Lauderdale County, Tennessee between 1867 and 1870. Entries include the patient's name, the date of treatment, the diagnosis, the treatment administered, and the amount of money due.
Biographical/Historical Note
Montraville Whitson Gudger was born to James Madison and Anne Dillard (Love) Gudger in North Carolina in 1825. He earned his medical degree from the University of Nashville on March 1, 1856. Gudger married Elizabeth Read Davies, and the couple had eight children: Montraville Love, Mary Landon, Bettie Cazine (Gudger) Gilbert, Frances Leticia Fannie (Gudger) Bolin, James Gallatin, Charles Meigs, Rosa G., and Annie Dillard. The family settled in Ripley (Lauderdale County), Tennessee where Gudger practiced medicine until his death in the 1890s.
