Biographical/Historical Note

Presbyterian minister Reverend Hezekiah Balch founded Greeneville College in Greeneville, Tennessee in 1794. Another Presbyterian minister, Reverend Samuel W. Doak, established Tusculum Academy (which became Tusculum College in 1844) in Tusculum, Tennessee in 1818. The two schools merged to form Greeneville and Tusculum College in 1868. The institution's name was shortened to Tusculum College in 1912 and the school continues today as a four-year institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, USA.
