Abstract

This ledger belonged to Dr. Samuel R. McDowell, who practiced medicine in Sullivan County during the first half of the 20th century. It records customers' payments for his services between 1916 and 1921.

Biographical/Historical Note

Samuel Robert McDowell was born to Robert Thomas and Nannie Ella (Summers) McDowell on October 21, 1884. He decided to become a doctor after riding with a country doctor near Strawberry Plains, Tennessee as a child. McDowell completed his undergraduate education at Lincoln Memorial University and earned his M. D. from the Medical College of Virginia in 1909. After graduation, he went into private practice in Tazewell, Virginia. He married Mary Pierce (d. 1964) on June 9, 1910 and the couple had two children: Mary Eleanor and Chambliss P. McDowell joined the Holston Institute near Blountville, Tennessee in 1912 and continued practicing medicine in Sullivan County for 50 years. He retired to great acclaim December of 1964 due to poor health and died on December 16, 1965.
