William Conner Letter
This collection consists of a letter dated March 3, 1848 from General William Conner to President James Polk, written from Brownsville, Tennessee. Conner requests the appointment of his son, John Conner, as a captain in the U. S. Army. John was enlisted in the 4th regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers at the time this letter was written.

Biographical/Historical Note
William Conner was born on December 27, 1803 to John and Nancy (Wigginton) Conner in Culpepper (now Rappahannock) County, Virginia. He married Emily Smith in 1823, and the couple moved to Brownsville, Tennessee in 1828. Here, Conner worked as a surveyor and was heavily involved with the creation and promotion of the town of Ashport (Lauderdale County), Tennessee. He also served in the militia and was involved in politics, education, and railroads. After Emily's death, Conner married Sally J. Terrill. Conner died in about 1887.
