This collection houses prescription sheets, patient lists, patient instructions, and billing information sheets from ledger books created and maintained by numerous Knoxville area physicians and druggists. Among the pharmacists named on the prescriptions are Wade H. Gooch of the Doyle Drug Store in Doyle, Tennessee and H. R. Rosenthal of Knoxville, Tennessee. Another prescription mentions Dr. J. P. Tillery and provides the address of his office in the Harris building, and the reverse side of one of the ledger pages contains an illustration of a doctor caring for a sick girl.

Biographical/Historical Note

Wade Hampton Gooch was born on January 2nd, 1880 to William W. Gooch and Melcena Gist. He married Mattie Dora Mason (1884-1962) on December 18th, 1901. The couple had one child, Margaret (Gooch) Boyd (1910-1991). Gooch worked as a pharmacist in Doyle, Tennessee at the Doyle Drug Store. He died on March 8th, 1940 in Sparta, Tennessee and is buried there in the Highland Cemetery.

John Paxton Tillery was born on February 29th, 1864 to John L. Tillery and Sarah Russel. Tillery attended the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. He became a licensed Medical Doctor in 1889 and began practicing allopathic medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee. He married Florence A. Starrett (1867-1920) on August 24th, 1890 in Monroe, Tennessee. The couple had at least one child, Duncan Eve Tillery (1891-1980). Dr. John P. Tillery died of heart disease on May 27th, 1927 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

No biographical information is available for H. R. Rosenthal.
