Biographical/Historical Note
The Knoxville Academy of Medicine was founded in 1853 by the pioneer physicians of Knox County. It followed the creation of a state medical association in 1830 and a regional medical association in 1845. In 1853, local chapters were encouraged to form and by 1856 the state legislature gave power to the Knoxville Medical Society. In 1857, Otis F. Hill, MD became the first president of the Knoxville Medical Society, which would later take the name the Knoxville Academy of Medicine.
