Abstract
This collection contains speeches, program books, minute and attendance books, book reviews, and other materials documenting the history of the Irving Club of Knoxville from 1861 to the present.
Biographical/Historical Note
Founded by Joshua William Caldwell (1856-1909) in 1886, the Irving Club is a private literary group that meets regularly between September and June each year to discuss literature and current events. Individual members are assigned topics or literary works to research and present to the rest of the group. Several faculty and other individuals associated with the University of Tennessee have participated in the Irving Club throughout its long history including John C. Hodges, Andy Holt, William Bass, Alvin Nielson, and Calvin Buehler.

This collection is made up of nine boxes and divided into three series:
- Series I: Administrative Records
- Series II: Speeches and Book Reviews
- Series III: Publications

Acquisition Note
This collection is active. The earliest donation was given to the University of Tennessee Special Collections in 1959 by Judge John M. Thornburg and his wife. Periodic donations continue to be added to the collection.
