This collection houses unofficial papers documenting John Shumaker's appointment as the President of the University of Tennessee and the subsequent state and internal audits that led to his resignation. Among the materials included are a Review of the Issues Related to the Presidency of Dr. John Shumaker (October 2003), a Special Review of the Office of the President (August 2003), printed emails concerning the presidential search and appointment (2002), biographies of Emerson H. Fly and John Shumaker, and newspapers (2002). The collection also includes slides and a CD-ROM of digital photographs of John Shumaker at various UT events, a calendar given out to employees, a copy of the Year In Review (2002-2003), and online articles concerning the presidential search and the scandal involving Shumaker's use of the UT plane in 2003.

Abstract

Biographical/Historical Note

John William Shumaker was born to Thomas E. and Sara Jane (Giffn) Cobun Shumaker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 21 August 1942. He earned his BA at the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and continued on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his MA in 1966 and his PhD in 1969. He was later awarded an honorary LLD from Briarwood College (1989) and an honorary EdD from Kyung Hee University (1992).

Shumaker began his professional career as Professor of Classics at Ohio State University (1969-1977). He was also involved in administration, serving as the Assistant Dean of Humanities (1971-1972), Acting Chairman of the Department of Classics (1972-1973), and Associate Dean of the College of Humanities (1973-1977). Shumaker became the Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the State University of New York (1977-1983) and later served as the Vice President of Research and Educational Development (1983-1985) and as Vice President of Academic Planning and Development (1985-1987). Shumaker left New York to become President of Central Connecticut State University in 1987. He left this post to become President if the University of Louisville in 1995, where he remained until 2002.

Shumaker became President of the University of Tennessee in 2002. In 2003, internal and state audits of questionable presidential expenses led to his resignation and former UT President Joseph E. Johnson served the remainder of his term. After leaving the University, Shumaker worked to enhance educational opportunities in Afghanistan.
