This collection houses three certificates of distinction presented by the University of Tennessee's Classical Department (dated 1879, 1880, and 1881), a report of grades (dated January 19, 1882), and a portrait photograph (dated April 25, 1919) documenting Rogers Van Gilder of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Biographical/Historical Note
Rogers Van Gilder was born to John Somers and Mary (Gandy) Van Gilder in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 25, 1861. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts on June 7, 1882. Van Gilder married Aurelia Essex McClung on September 11, 1888 and the couple had two children, Frank McClung and John Somers (who later taught at the University of Tennessee). Rogers Van Gilder died in about 1950 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
