Abstract
This collection consists of a letter dated March 14, 1912 from University of Tennessee student Oscar Little Farris to Miss Frizzelle Phillips in Gallay, Tennessee. The letter describes courses at the University, freshman hazing rituals, military drills, and the dormitory.
Biographical/Historical Note
Oscar Little Farris was born on 11 July 1889 in Franklin County, Tennessee to John Thomas and Mary Ann (Phillips) Farris. He completed his BS in Scientific Agriculture at the University of Tennessee in 1914 and his MS in Agriculture at the University of Missouri in 1915. He began working for the University of Tennessee's Agricultural Extension Service as a County Agent in Maury County in 1916, but soon left to fight in World War I. He returned to Extension work in 1920, where he remained until retiring in 1959. Farris died on 17 June 1961.
Farris married Mary Elizabeth Cochran on 20 February 1918 in Franklin County, Tennessee. They had at least one daughter, Mary.
