Early University of Tennessee Faculty Papers

 Collection
Identifier: AR-0262

  • Staff Only

This collection houses a series of papers circulated among the University of Tennessee faculty between 1893 and 1905. A large portion of the material consists of correspondence between faculty members and various students requesting course substitutions or more time to complete their degrees. Also included are the minutes of numerous faculty meetings.

Of particular interest are the resolutions housed in Folder 7, which include materials documenting the deaths of University Trustee Colonel James W. Gaut and Lillian Aurilla (LaCore) Ferris (wife of Professor Charles E. Ferris) in addition to a resolution supporting US negotiations of a treaty to avoid future wars with Britain. Folder 8 houses official correspondence received by President Charles E. Dabney, including requests to attend the 25th anniversary of Vanderbilt University and official letters from the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis requesting UT's participation or representation in State University Day, the International Congress of Arts and Sciences, and the German Educational Exhibit. The latter is a request from the General Commissioner of the Prussian Ministry of Education, Count Limburg Stirmus.
