Biographical/Historical Note
Professor Albert Miller Lea formed an Infantry Company at the university. The 1867 Land-Grant College Act required military tactics to be taught, and the University of Tennessee was made the state’s land-grant institution. In 1916, the National Defense Act formally made this organization into an ROTC unit. Air Corps training was instituted after World War II, in 1946. By 1949, Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC were separated into individual programs.
