Abstract
This collection houses the records of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Student Affairs dating from 1969 to 1993. During this time, the office was held by Howard Aldmon (1969-1984) and Philip Scheurer (1985-1999). Among the subjects discussed are admissions, minority students, the construction of Frat Row, athletics, student unrest, University finances and governance, student life, and Knoxville community organizations.
Biographical/Historical Note
Howard F. Aldmon was born on 18 November 1929 and died on 8 July 1984 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Philip Anthony Scheurer was born on 4 March 1943 in Hoboken, New Jersey. He earned his BA in Special Education from Trenton State College in June of 1965 and his MS in Education from Southern Illinois University in June of 1967. He began working for the University of Tennessee as the Assistant Dean of Students in 1967 and served as the Coordinator for Student Activities (1969-1970), Director of Student Activities (1971-1976), Dean of Student Activities (1976-1983), and Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Activities (1983-1984) before becoming Vice Chancellor for Administration and Student Affairs. He later served as the UT System's Vice President of Operations and retired in 2005 after being criticized for not being careful in examining expenses incurred by UT President John Shumaker and for awarding projects in international education without bids.
