Abstract
This collection houses correspondence, memoranda, reports, and financial documents showing the operations of the University of Tennessee's Office of Administration and Student Affairs from 1984 to 1992.
Biographical/Historical Note
In 1990, the Office of Student Affairs was expanded to take on budget and administrative duties. At this time Philip A. Scheurer, who had been Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs since 1984, was named Vice Chancellor for Administration and Student Affairs. Bert E. Sams became Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration and Student Affairs.
Philip Anthony Scheurer was born on 4 March 1943 in Hoboken, New Jersey. He earned his BA in Special Education from Trenton State College in June of 1965 and his MS in Education from Southern Illinois University in June of 1967. He began working for the University of Tennessee as the Assistant Dean of Students in 1967 and served as the Coordinator for Student Activities (1969-1970), Director of Student Activities (1971-1976), Dean of Student Activities (1976-1983), and Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Student Activities (1983-1984) before becoming Vice Chancellor for Administration and Student Affairs. He later served as the UT System's Vice President of Operations and retired in 2005 after being criticized for not being careful in examining expenses incurred by UT President John Shumaker and for awarding projects in international education without bids.
