Biographical/Historical Note
The University of Tennessee (then called East Tennessee University) offered its first classes for teachers in 1844. In 1902, the education program was combined with several others to form the Department of Education, Domestic Science & Art, and this new department was transferred to the College of Liberal Arts and renamed the College of Home Economics in 1902. The School of Education was established as a separate program in 1911 and became a College in 1926. This College was combined with the College of Home Economics (renamed the College of Human Ecology in 1987) to form the College of Education, Health, and Human Services in 2002.
