Biographical/Historical Note

Noble Leslie DeVotie, Nathan Elams Cockrell, John Barratt Rudulph, John Webb Kerr, Samuel Marion Dennis, Wade Hiram Hampton Foster, Abner Edwin Patton, and Thomas Chappell Cook founded Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Alabama on 9 March 1856. Only one chapter survived the Civil War, but the fraternity was soon reestablished at the University of Georgia and at the University of Virginia and grew rapidly. Today, the organization boasts 8,200 undergraduate members in 225 chapters in 47 U. S. States and Canada.
